Related A Sea Story:
So, one day were returning to Mare Island and transiting
trough Martinez bay and a sail boat was putzing around
the center of the channel. The
commanding Officer was getting a “Little Pissed”.
Us: Sail Boat
(SB): Sailing Boat, This is inbound submarine, request you clear the channel so
that we can pass.
SB (or Stupid
Bastard?): We’re a vessel under sail and WE have the Right of Way (Rule 18 of the Rules of the Road).
This went on
for a few minutes than the CO tried reasoning with him.
Us: Sail Boat,
This is in bound submarine, we’re a vessel Constrained By Draft. We have the Right of Way. Little known fact, submarines can draw as deep
of a draft as a carrier.
SB We’re a
vessel under sail and WE have the Right of Way
Finally the CO
got pissed and finally transmitted the following on the Bridge to Bridge radio:
Us: Sail Boat,
Can you say Torpedo, Over.
SB: Broke camp
Hard To Starboard to clear the channel,
Us: Thought so. Inbound Submarine, Out.
