Several months ago, I was able to purchase a RPR in 6.5 Creedmore. Since then, Ruger has come out with an updated model, but I'm happy with mine. Since then, I equipped the rifle with a Nightforce NXS 8-32×56 scope and finally added a Barrett BORS (I like cheating).
NOTE: If you are planning on getting a BORS, get the Barrett Scope
Rings, because the BORS mounts to these rings. Don't waste your money on other rings
(grumble, grumble, grumble).
Total cost:
Rifle: $1400 (now down to $1300, i think, for the next generation of RPR).
Rifle: $1400 (now down to $1300, i think, for the next generation of RPR).
Scope: $2200
BORS: $1400
Total: $5000
I was able to get a 200 rd case of Hornady
120 gr. GMX, but at $400 box for a case of 200 ($2.00 a shot), I can't
afford it. Fortunately for me, I also
shoot 6.5 Grendel, so
I already have Sierra
123 gr. 6.5 mm Matchking bullets laying around. Dies
and initial brass
was cheap, I picked up 1000 rds, of brass.
First impressions: Great Rifle. Evan using factory ammo, I'm shooting groups
less than 1" at 100 yards.
Here is one of my coworkers after
firing 10 shots. To quote:
Me: Here you go, two magazines of 5
rounds.
D: no, I'll just shoot one mag.
5 shots later I handed him the second
mag which also went down range.
And here is what he did with Factory
Ammo:
But to analyze what's going on, get a
chronograph. I have a MagnetoSpeed Chronograph,
version 2.0. If you reload, you need one
to find out what's going on with your reloads.
The thing that is nice about the MagnetoSpeed, is that it straps on the
muzzle, and is not sitting about 10 yds down range waiting to get shop. In
addition to this, you can download the data directly into Excel for
further analysis.
For reloading, I am using the Nosler
data, which is proving pretty accurate:
Unfortunately I don't have pictures to
back it up, but the IMR 4007 SSC was on (for an accurate load (for 41.0) and the Reloader
17 (RL17) is really close.
But for most accurate load, I found
the IMR 4895
Here is a 3 shot group measuring
0071"
(The yellow spot is from a sticker that I placed on the target as an aim point)
Because I didn't know where the
bullets were going, I fired the 4th shot about 1/4" low...
And then wind at KHSC picked up just in time for my 5th shot...
Overall impressions: Great rifle. Spend the money on the optics, and you have
to reload to get the maximum accuracy out of the rifle. This rifle will easily outperform the shooter.
If you can afford the $$$ and have one cross your sights, buy it!!!
